The fourth brewery on our list is woodgrain. And, today, like last week, my husband and I are going to visit two breweries in one day. In fact, during this beer tour, I’ve made three trips up to Sioux Falls all in the name of “research”.

Walking into Woodgrain, I was surprised that we basically walked through a bank lobby, where from the entrance doors I could see brokers and clients on the phone with clients. And all I could wonder was if they, too, made their way over to Woodgrain after a long day at work to decompress.

Barrels and barley

After walking in, we looked over the menu, then decided to sit up at the bar, and I of course, selected one stout and one sour to sample from their brewery list. Looking around, I loved that one of the first things you see against the far wall is their brewery tanks enclosed behind a glass enclosure. Filling up the entire back wall, this is almost a statement piece, reminding customers that their beer is brewed on site.

In fact, while we were there, I met one of the main brewery technicians, and learned a little about how they got their name. Sourcing inspiration from the technique of aging beer in oak barrels, to the various kinds of malt and barley used in the production of this extremely versatile beverage, the founders of WoodGrain came up with their business name.

Milk stout and milk chocolate

After learning a little bit about this local brewery, we also learned about one of their most-esteemed products to come out of their imaginations, Double Barrel CocoBolo. Aged for nine months in bourbon and rum barrels, this Imperial Milk Stout has so much flavor, it’s no wonder it has become a local favorite.

Another small detail we noticed at this brewery was their beer mix, which consisted of Chex and cheddar mix, along with M&M’s mixed in. Since they do not sell food here, personally I feel this is a better alternative than the popcorn you find at almost every bar in town. And they sell this mix by the cup, $2 per portion, which is an ingenious way to bring in a little extra cash for an already profitable business.

Plan your visit

My husband and I arrived here in the early afternoon, and by the time we left, it was almost a full house. It seems this location is a very popular spot for everyone in all different ages and backgrounds. For example, we saw businessmen meeting to converse over their favorite draft ale or lager, to young adults coming in to enjoy the alternative atmosphere, and even a group of older ladies taking advantage of the relaxing setting.

Overall, this would be a great place to stop for a social drink during your downtown shopping activities. Make sure to check out their website (http://www.woodgrainbrew.com/) for an updated list of what’s on tap, and maybe even get yourself some merchandise. Then head over to their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/woodgrainbrew) for their schedule of events and any weekly specials or announcements.
