Our last brewery we visited in Sioux Falls is actually the newest brewery on our list. Opening its Sioux Falls location in 2019, owners Matt Schiller and Jeff Zierdt have had five years of learning how to operate a brewery up in their home town of Big Lake, Minnesota, where they opened their initial brewery back in 2014.

Beginning as home brewers, they realized their talent would go wasted if they did not pursue starting their own business, and they even had a unique name, Lupulin. Under the flowers of the female hop plant lies a bitter yellowish powder, called lupulin, which is more-or-less the essence of hops in its purest form, and results in some of the best tasting beer. So, now that I know where the name originated, it makes sense that the logo color is a yellow leaf, and this logo is used everywhere; from the coasters, to wall art, and even shirts and hats.

Plant power

After enjoying a couple pours at WoodGrain, my husband and I wanted to share a flight, and I’m glad we saved this brewery for last. We were immediately and warmly greeted by the staff when we walked in, and grabbed our seats up at the bar. Looking over the beer list, we chose five 5-ounce selections. From left to right together we chose Apricot Blonde, Oktoberfest, Oaked Marzen, Choco Peanut Butter Porter, Strawberry Rubarb fruited sour and Raspberry/Strawberry golden sour.

While we socialized with the bartenders and sipped on our pours, I walked around and immediately noticed an awesome gaming setup. I could see this being the retreat choice for many people after a long day at work. What better way to wind down than with a group of friends, enjoying a round of Donkey Kong.

And, set behind a glass enclosure, patrons have an unobstructed view of their massive tanks where they brew on-site. In fact, I was impressed with the massive number of choices off their beer list. In addition, some beers are brewed up in Big Lake, Minnesota, and then shipped down to Sioux Falls, allowing guests to try the wide array of selection, and vis versa.

Plan your visit

My husband and I were tempted to take some beer home with us, or even a growler, but we decided this would make a great Christmas present, since customers can order online, and have a “hoppy” holiday delivered to their front door. See what I did there?…

Overall, the customer service and fun atmosphere sold me on this brewery, and while doing my research on Lupulin, I quite enjoyed the comical sarcasm on their website (https://www.lupulinbrewing.com/), where you can shop their featured items list. Finally, check out their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/lupulinbrewingsiouxfalls) for daily and weekly updates and specials.

P.S. Take the advice of their popular slogan: “Work sucks, drink beer.”
