Our first stop in Le Mars is one that I’ve been waiting to write about for over a year now. Back when I was helping my friend plan her wedding, she selected Piece of Cake to make her wedding cake. And along with cakes, they are known for their heavenly cupcakes. Therefore, one afternoon, she booked a cupcake tasting session here, and I happily made time in my schedule for an epic sugar rush.

The start of something sweet

Situated a couple blocks south of Wells Visitors Center, Piece of Cake is conveniently located in downtown Le Mars on Central Ave NW. Having opened her business out of her home nearly ten years ago, owner Michelle Bomgaars felt the need to open a storefront after the popularity of her baking skills had outgrown her home kitchen.

In fact, more than ever, brides are requesting cupcakes over a formal cake, since cupcakes are bite-sized, and guests can try different flavors. My friend had both made for her wedding. She had their wedding cake they cut at the ceremony, and several different flavors of cupcakes as well.

Flavor explosion

The flavors we tried during our taste-testing visit were: carrot cake, white raspberry vanilla, cookie dough, coconut caramel delight, raspberry lemonade, white chocolate raspberry, and marble. My personal favorite was the raspberry lemonade, but after looking over their website (https://www.pieceofcakeiowa.com/), I’m excited to try even more flavors, such as, French toast, cheesecake, Twin Bing, or even dirt-and-worms, which is crushed Oreos and Gummi worms.

In fact, Michelle is constantly coming up with new flavors and creative designs. So, make sure to keep up with her Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pieceofcakeiowa), and check out what is currently being featured in her shop.

Plan your visit

Luckily for me, they’re open for lunch throughout the week, offering sandwiches, soups and a salad bar. But that means before I leave, I’ll have to purchase one of their cupcake sets, and since they sell cupcakes by the dozen, I guess I’ll have a chance to try as many flavors as possible. In addition, Michelle makes cookies, pies and even mini cheesecakes; and if you have gluten, egg or other allergies, she also has specialty options for you as well.

The next time I make my way to Le Mars, I’ll for sure stop by on my way home, grab a dozen, and enjoy my own DIY taste-testing session at home with my family. I’ll have to get a scorecard out so we can keep track of our favorites, and then maybe a pillow for the sugar coma to come soon after!
