my introduction to indian food

I fondly remember sharing authentic Indian cuisine with a group of international students at the University of South Dakota. We were invited over to a friend’s house one evening, and that was the first time I was introduced to curry. My taste buds exploded, and I was hooked.

So, when I found out an Indian restaurant would be opening in town down by Sam’s Club, I knew we were going to be making lots of unnecessary trips to the east side of town. Being the only Indian restaurant in town, this establishment stands out from amongst the rest.

repeat customers

We have put this on our favorite list, and invited several friends to experience it with us. Rave reviews is what we get every time. Even from those who are sensitive to spicy food. Yes, Indian food can be spicy, but what I like about Shahi Palace is you can control the level of heat to any dish.

our initial visit

In fact, on our first visit, being unfamiliar with their menu, our server, who was also one of the co-owners, took his time to explain the menu and recommend items we may like. We ended up sharing their famous naan, which is baked unleavened bread with varying types of filling, from berries, to garlic, to cheese; we chose garlic naan. We also shared stuffed fritters, called vegetable pakora, with two types of dipping sauce.

For our entrées my husband ordered Tandoori, a dish served with your choice of meat over a bed of bell peppers, onion and lemon. I chose my all time favorite, Korma, a creamy coconut sauce served with your choice of meat, along with cashews, almonds and raisins.

plan your visit

Opening their first restaurant in Sioux Falls, it has been almost ten years since their debut here in Siouxland, and we here in the Midwest have accepted them with open arms and hungry bellies. So, be sure to stop by, show support, and try something new. You never know, you may end up falling in love with Indian food.
