About ten minutes outside Sioux City, in Lawton, Iowa, sits the Scarecrow Farms. Purchased in 2010, owners Todd and Tara Shumansky are celebrating their tenth season this year. Also owning Nightmare on 4th Street and the Fear Factory, the couple wanted a family-friendly place for children and parents to enjoy. I, personally, have been here at least four times, and each visit I explored something new.

Let’s Explore!

When you first arrive, you walk through their gift shop, or “Farm Market”, giving you a chance to game plan on what souvenirs and salsas to purchase after your fun-filled visit. Admission fees change, so don’t quote me on the price you see here if, when you visit, prices are different.

In addition to being open daily during their Fall season from October 1st to October 31st, they also host Sunflower Days, and Slice of Summer where Todd and Tara open up their farm for people to come pick their own produce. I have yet to go to this, which means next Summer this will be at the very top of my to-do list. Growing a variety of fruits and vegetables, visitors can pick their favorites, teach their kids the importance of healthy eating, and even encourage their teenagers to get their hands dirty.

Sunflower Days

As for Sunflower Days, my husband and I went a couple years ago in September, and that’s when I learned how big sunflowers can get! A month before Fall Fest begins, patrons can pick their own bouquet of sunflowers, bring a photographer along for family pictures, and even enjoy some live music from local bands. We solely went just to enjoy a day outside, and to support a thriving Siouxland business.

Fall Festival

Once the sunflowers are all picked, they mow down their field, preparing it for all the pumpkins and gourdes they have been growing since the Spring. And they have all kinds! When you visit the Scarecrow Farm during their Fall Festival, not only will you enjoy a day amongst pumpkins, but also check out their apple orchard. Growing an array of apple varieties, Todd and Tara offer many options to choose from, so make sure you grab your basket, and fill up on your favorite.

So much to do and see!

Directly across from the apple orchard is the corn maze. Thrill seekers and their children will enjoy getting lost in this expansive and winding outdoor adventure. Not tired yet? Challenge yourself to the obstacle course, and become the next Siouxland Ninja Warrior! Or maybe you want to become a pirate! They have an interactive ship just for you.

Along with multiple portrait backdrops, haybale swings, playgrounds, and even a giant inflated trampoline, they even have a petting zoo! On one of our visits, my husband and I enjoyed several minutes with a very friendly llama.

Plan your visit

Open during seasonal events year-round, this is one of the best places to take your kids for a full day of excitement, learning and interacting with their surroundings. And don’t forget to take a rest during your eventful day on a hayrack ride, and then grab a snack at the food stand.

Make sure to plan your visit, and even check out their website (https://www.scarecrowfarm.com/) and Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/VisitScarecrowFarm/) for seasonal specials. I still haven’t tried their zip line, which is something I’m looking forward to doing this Spring and Summer.
