Visiting our second brewery in Sioux City, my husband and I decided to come to Marto Brewing right after our drive back from Wise I Brewery in Le Mars. Unlike the other breweries we’ve visited so far, Marto Brewing also offers a full menu, and has become a unique addition to restaurant options for downtown patrons. In fact, I remember the talk of the town when word got out that the space next to the Promenade Theater, which had been vacant for years, had finally been bought, was in the process of being renovated, and that a locally owned brewery would open its doors at this location the next year.

Brick oven and barrels of beer

Opening their doors in mid-2019, owner Erik Martin (whose nickname for years was Marto, which then became his business name) and his team operate a 10-barrel system capable of producing 310 gallons of beer daily. In addition to their award-winning beer, patrons from all over Siouxland have come to enjoy the extensive culinary menu. From pizza to pasta, and even salmon, chief chef, Nick Goodwin, has designed a unique menu around one of their most iconic features, a black and white tiled Wood-fired brick oven. And walking in, we were immediately greeted by this giant wood-fired oven, along with nearby grills where nearly everything on the menu is cooked right in front of their guests’ eyes.

Utilizing an open-air concept to the dining room, patrons can sit up at the bar surrounding the brick oven, or at one of the many tables under the 25-foot ceiling, or even out on the patio. Being that it was a warm Summer day, we decided to stay inside and enjoy our dinner.

Pretzel and a flight

Ordering Marto’s famous giant pretzel, my husband and I also shared a Cajun sandwich with kettle chips. While we waited for our meal, we split a flight of their locally brewed beer. With each glass holding 5oz, I decided to order four beers I knew I was going to really enjoy.

From the left to right we have two fruited sours, “Memoirs of a Tiki Bar” and “Member Berries”, and then following that are a porter and a stout, “Plush” and “Maximum Deviation”. Overall, and per usual, I enjoyed the stout the most.

Overall, we really enjoyed the pretzel, we will definitely be back to order that again, along with their wood-fire oysters. Since I ordered my favorites, stouts and sours, we decided we’ll have to come back so my husband can order a flight of his favorite, ales and lagers, and maybe an IPA.
