bridge and bluff

Crossing the Discovery Bridge from Yankton, South Dakota to Crofton, Nebraska, you’ll have a scenic view of the Missouri River as you make your way to this unique Visitor Center.

Located on the top of the scenic Calumet Bluff in Nebraska, the Visitor Center gives you an unobstructed view of Lewis and Clark Lake and the Missouri River.

what a view!

After my husband and I parked our car and got out, we immediately walked to the vantage point to look over and out. You can see for miles up here, and one can only imagine what the intrepid duo, Lewis and Clark, felt after cresting this massive cliff with the yet untamed Missouri River below.

We learned about the Council of Calumet, and the efforts to man a keelboat up the raging river. We also enjoyed analyzing the map of the Lewis and Clark trail, and their epic 8,000-mile journey.

first impressions

Making our way into the Visitor Center, we were greeted with impressively tall ceilings. And since this is so close to the Gavins Point Dam, much of what is on display reflects the construction of this vital structure.

Government funded, and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Lewis and Clark Visitor Center is considered a Gavins Point Dam project. Here, you’ll learn about the efforts to protect the local wildlife, how the Dam was envisioned, and the process of building.

watch and learn

Make your way onto the outdoor patio to get a better view of the Dam, and don’t miss the interactive displays, sensory learning tables, and a brief history of the Corps.

Lastly, make time to watch a 20-minute film documenting the building process and completion of the Gavins Point Dam.
