Brewing Bonds in Vermillion
XIX Brewing Company found its roots in the building that once housed Mead Lumber, now transformed into a hub for the community. With the tagline “good beer. better company.,” the brewery aims to be more than just a place to savor meticulously crafted beers; it aspires to be a gathering space for families, friends, and all members of the Vermillion community.
The brewery’s name, XIX, pays homage to Clay County’s license plate number, which is nineteen. A nod to the local identity, this number resonates in license plates, Highway 19, and now, the community’s very own brewery and taproom.
Meet the Minds Behind the Brews
Ed Gerrish, an Associate Professor of Public Administration at the University of South Dakota, serves as the financial planner and brewing overseer at XIX Brewing Company. Ed, a homebrewer with a 17-year passion for crafting beers, envisions a space where people can gather to enjoy both quality beer and meaningful conversations. His partner in this venture, Katey Ulrich, takes charge of marketing and taproom management. As the Director of Admissions & Marketing at the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law, Katey has long held the dream of owning a bar in Vermillion to foster a sense of community.
Ed and Katey, with their distinct yet complementary interests, form the dynamic duo steering XIX Brewing Company toward success. Their shared love for Vermillion and craft beer is the driving force behind this venture.
Crafting Dreams and Community Support
XIX Brewing Company’s vision is straightforward: create a community space where good beer and great company converge. To turn this dream into reality, the brewery relies on the support of the community. Funding will contribute to acquiring and renovating a building, procuring brewing equipment, and crafting an inviting space where patrons can share moments with loved ones.
Heading the brewing operations is Mike Markham, a seasoned Head Brewer with a journey that started in the Navy. After delving into the craft beer scene in San Diego, California, Mike transitioned his homebrewing hobby into a profession. Joining some of San Diego’s prominent craft breweries in 2014, Mike has accumulated nine years of experience, continually perfecting his craft. He is passionate about brewing diverse styles, firmly believing that there’s a type of beer out there for everyone.
