In the heart of downtown Vermillion, South Dakota, a dream brewed for Leslie Gerrish, the proud owner of The Bean community coffeehouse. A dream that started as a whimsical idea turned into a reality when the perfect opportunity knocked on her door. The Bean finds its cozy home within the stylish confines of The Iron Rooster, a recently established boutique home décor haven that beckons with its tasteful furnishings and inviting ambiance.

From Dream to Reality: Leslie Gerrish’s Journey to The Bean

Leslie Gerrish, married to Dr. Ed Gerrish of USD’s political science department, embarked on her journey towards coffee shop ownership during the summer of 2021. She kicked off by selling cold brew coffee at the local farmer’s market, a venture that not only allowed her to source quality beans but also build a buzz around The Bean.

The collaboration with Jessi Wilharm, the owner of The Iron Rooster, proved pivotal. Wilharm, recognizing the need for retail downtown, envisioned a coffee bar to complement her home décor store. The result was a thoughtfully designed coffee shop that became an integral part of the newly renovated space. In addition, Leslie Gerrish and Martin Prendrgast, co-owners of The Bean, have woven their dream into the fabric of Vermillion.

The Bean is more than just a coffee shop; it’s a testament to Leslie Gerrish’s passion for good coffee and community connections. The cozy storefront, with its inviting ambiance, is a testament to the careful thought put into its design by professional shop front fitters.

A Unique Blend of Coffee and Community

The coffee offerings at The Bean are curated to perfection. They serve a delightful Guatemalan blend named Fast Track, roasted by Good Folks Coffee Company. Additionally, beans from The Breaks Coffee Roasting Company in Sioux Falls find their way into the rich brews. Leslie Gerrish is deeply involved in the coffee journey, constantly learning and building relationships with suppliers who share the same dedication to quality.

Originally open from 7-11am, Leslie and her team soon realized patrons wanted more, and shortly after they extended their hours to fit the schedule of studying students to socializing date nights. The Gerrishes aim to create a haven where people can unwind, work, and enjoy their coffee. Ed Gerrish emphasizes the importance of a non-rushed atmosphere, where patrons can savor their coffee amidst low music and engaging conversations. They even plan to add offices to the upstairs space.

The Bean is more than just a coffee stop; it’s a place for the Vermillion community to gather, work, and connect. Its evolution from a coffee destination to a community hub is evident in its warm and welcoming atmosphere. The business is small but mighty, making a significant impact in creating a space where people feel welcome.

Expansion and Evolution: The Next Chapter for Vermillion’s Favorite Coffee Spot

As a next step in its journey, The Bean has expanded its footprint. The Bean is thrilled to announce the availability of office space for rent, offering individuals a tranquil and inspiring environment right above their cozy coffee shop. This unique opportunity comes with its own set of perks, including easy access to delicious coffee and a welcoming atmosphere conducive to productivity.

If you’re in Vermillion, don’t miss the chance to experience The Bean. More than a coffeehouse, it’s a place where dreams percolate and community bonds strengthen.
