On our last two blog posts we visited two landmarks, the Statue of David and the Arc of Dreams, which transitions us into our next journey: Sculpture Walk! To get locals and visitors more familiar with Downtown Sioux Falls, the city along with local artists, worked together to bring 3-Demensional art to the city streets.
Free to the public, there are approximately 60 pieces of art dotting the landscape of the largest city in South Dakota. With the majority of the sculptures being easily accessible along Phillips Avenue, my friend, Katie, and I took a few hours out of our afternoon, and enjoyed about a mile-long brisk walk in early March.
#1 in the World!
And I’m glad we made time for this artistic endeavor, because later I found out that Trip Advisor votes on attractions to visit worldwide, and selects from those that are copiously given a 5-star rating. Out of all the places to visit in the world, the Sioux Falls Sculpture Walk was voted #1 on Trip Advisor’s 2020 Travelers’ Choice Award. Thus, forever holding a distinguished spot on Trip Advisor’s Hall of Fame.
In fact, being internationally recognized as one of the best places to visit in the United States (and the world!) the Downtown Sioux Falls Sculpture Walk is going on 17 years of promoting public art. However free, this art is worth an accumulative $100,000 and has displayed over 800 art pieces throughout the years.
My personal favorites:
Photo op galore
Making for unique back drops, each original piece offers visitors a variety of photo opportunities. Hoisted up on pedestals, each sculpture is made of stainless steel, and has at its base a plaque describing the meaning, the artist’s name and their inspiration behind each creation.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor experience, walking past picturesque shops, diners, cocktail bars, breweries and cute boutiques. This is the place to be all afternoon, and into the evening. Plus, when the weather gets nicer, maybe Katie and I could revisit the Sculpture Walk and plan to do more than just window shop.
