As you can see from our past two posts there are a lot of outdoor activities in Sioux Falls, but this one has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Sioux Falls, and the Midwest as well. In fact, I remember the unveiling of the Arc of Dreams down here in Sioux City. There was quite a buzz about this massive construction being completed in Siouxland.

What’s your dream?

Spanning almost an entire football field, the Arc stretches from 6th to 8th Streets, rising above the river 85 feet. And just to give you a perspective of just how gigantic this sculpture is, you see that gap in the middle? That is 15 feet across!

A product of creator and artist, Dale Claude Lamphere, the Arc of Dreams represents the dreamers of the past, present and future. When my friend and I visited this site, I felt an overwhelming sense of awestruck and empowerment. I’m assuming Lamphere intended for this reaction, since he wanted this great sculpture to awaken in us our own dreams. Once we have that dream in us, it takes great courage to see its fruition and manifestation, thus the 15-foot gap, also known as the “leap of faith”.

In addition, this amazing sculpture has been funded by donors of the surrounding Sioux Falls and Siouxland communities, who believe in the importance of public art. Personally, I believe art should be made available to anyone and everyone, and public art which can be admired by passersby alike is crucial to the foundation of society.

Plan your visit

Beyond the artistic sculpture and inside the foyer of the Cherpa Place are various concepts and designs mounted on the walls. Pictures of the building process illustrate the massive overhaul of such immense undertaking. Weighing an impressive 60,000 pounds, the Arc of Dreams is unlike anything else in the world. In fact, having such a publicly and meaningful impact has helped bring awareness to the city of Sioux Falls and its equally famous sculpture walk, which we will visit in our next post.
