Amanda Browder: Artist and Innovator
Amanda Browder, a trailblazing installation and community engagement artist, employs fabric as her medium to create transformative artworks that envelop buildings in a kaleidoscope of color. Inspired by the disruptive “Dazzle” camouflage from World War I, Browder orchestrates public sewing events, like the upcoming “Razzle Dazzle” project at Sioux City Art Center, engaging volunteers to stitch together hundreds of yards of fabric. The resulting fabric tapestry, with its rich hues and intricate patterns, is set to drape across the art center’s atrium, glass hallway, brick facades, and a portion of the Gilchrist Learning Center, transcending architectural boundaries and infusing spaces with a stained glass-like allure.
A vocal advocate of community representation through art, Browder’s work extends beyond the fabric itself. Her installations are a vibrant celebration of the diverse tapestry of human experiences, reflecting various backgrounds, cultures, and stories within the fabric’s folds. As Browder herself puts it, “This project is all about celebrating the stories around fabric. The city is made up of lots of different backgrounds, locations, cultures, and this work is about celebrating that.” Her vision echoes within the diverse textures and colors woven into her fabric installations, embodying the vibrant mosaic of society.
Born in Missoula, MT, Browder’s artistic journey led her to acquire an MFA/MA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and share her expertise as a teacher at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Currently residing in Brooklyn, she has crafted over 25 large-scale fabric installations worldwide, engaging with local communities, amplifying diverse voices, and drawing inspiration from communal collaboration.
