Around the corner from Simply Perfect, is another shop that is owned and operated by the same individuals who manage Simply Perfect: Plum’s Cooking Company. In fact, both storefronts are in the same historic shopping center, 8th and Railroad. We may have time to explore the other shops in this unique setting, but for now let’s get in the kitchen.

Not into cutting corners

Originally started in 1986, over the next thirty years Plum’s would become one of the most influential culinary destinations for patrons and expert cooks needing that next kitchen accessory. On the shelves you’ll find products straight from Germany, Italy, and even locally homemade jams. Owner, Penny Klinedinst, who also owns Simply Perfect, is not one to cut corners, and takes pride in sourcing out products with excellent reputations.

And she has some help. Selling her storefront in 2006 to Penny, founder Caroline Peterson, still helps guide the business from afar, offering advice when needed, ensuring Plum’s continues for another thirty years, and beyond.

Kitchen must-haves

Neatly aligned on the shelves are various bottles of wine from all over the country, a variety of herbal teas, infused sea salts, and a plethora of seasonings. You’ll find high quality pots and pans, gift sets, cutting boards, and even hand carved wood utensils.

There’s also a corner dedicated to Wedding Registries! How fun! This would be the best place to create your registry, for multiple reasons. One being you’ll most likely receive some of the most unique items no one else has in their home, and you’re supporting a locally owned business ran by a team of educated and professional women.

Cooking classes!

And since we’re on the subject of weddings, why not have your bachelorette party here as well? Did anyone say cooking classes? That’s right, Plum’s Cooking Company offers an array of guided cooking classes taught by world travelers who have tested and refined their culinary skills from years of experience. And you get to learn from some of the best.

From Italian to Indian, and soul food to Sicilian, there’s so much to choose from. Plum’s also has Kid’s Camp every Summer, and for one week you’re child will learn the basics on how to make dishes from Mexico, Asia, and even France. I’m getting hungry already.

Taught in house, with a fully functioning kitchen, classes are available throughout the year, and spots fill up fast, so secure your ticket, and get to cooking. I know I’m interested in the Date Night cooking class, and maybe my friend, Katie, and I could hop in on the Tour of South America. Learning how to use different oils and spices, then pairing them with the perfect proteins and vegetables will only help to expand my knowledge of food preparation in the kitchen.
