In the heart of downtown Vermillion, South Dakota, a unique haven awaits both literature enthusiasts and avid gamers alike. From Classroom to Community Center

At the helm of this literary and gaming sanctuary is Mike Phelan, a former educator whose passion for teaching transcended into creating a space that fosters creativity, imagination, and community engagement. After spending a significant portion of his career in various teaching roles, including lecturing on linguistics at Ohio State University, Phelan found a new calling in the heart of Vermillion.

The idea for Outside of a Dog Books & Games germinated from a realization that there was a gap in the market—a literary bookstore in a college town was notably absent. It was Phelan’s wife, Jennifer, who envisioned the possibility of bringing such a space to life. Little did they know that this idea would blossom into a vibrant community center for book lovers and gamers alike.

Opening a bookstore comes with its own set of challenges, from learning how to curate and sell products to finding the perfect physical space. Phelan, however, didn’t navigate this journey alone. The Vermillion community and the Vermillion Area Chamber and Development Company rallied around the cause. Through a crowd-funding campaign, Outside of a Dog Books & Games raised over $12,000, symbolizing the collective support of a community eager to have its own literary and gaming haven.

The Story Behind the Crowdfunding Success

A unique touch that pays homage to the donors who contributed to the campaign is found in the store’s décor. Adorning the walls are pictures of dogs owned by those who generously supported the endeavor. This personal touch not only creates a warm atmosphere but also serves as a visual reminder of the community’s involvement in bringing this haven to life.

The name “Outside of a Dog” holds a whimsical charm, derived from a quote by the legendary Groucho Marx: “Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” This playful nod to the intertwining companionship of books and dogs sets the tone for the welcoming and amiable environment within.

Beyond its shelves filled with carefully curated books, Outside of a Dog boasts an extensive collection of games. Catering to diverse tastes, the assortment ranges from two-person games to group activities, quick-hour games to more immersive experiences that might span months. To encourage customers to explore these games, the store plans to host game nights—a perfect opportunity for gamers to try before they buy. Those who decide to purchase on the same day as their game night visit even get a discount, sweetening the deal.

Literary Adventures and Gaming Nights

Mike Phelan has grand plans for Outside of a Dog’s future. In addition to the already-thriving game nights, the store intends to host various events, including author events, in-store poetry readings, and open mic nights. Phelan warmly extends an invitation to college students, encouraging them to explore the literary and gaming haven that is Outside of a Dog Books & Games.

Whether you’re seeking your next literary adventure, a captivating board game, or a welcoming space for community events, Outside of a Dog Books & Games beckons with open arms. Step inside and discover a world where literature and gaming unite, creating a haven that celebrates the magic of stories and the thrill of games.
