In previous posts I have expressed the popular uprising of food trucks nationwide. Bringing food to a different neighborhood daily and weekly makes for an unexpected anticipation of excitement. Food trucks allow patrons to come and go as they please, without feeling obligated to invest an hour of their time in one establishment. Food trucks are also convenient for teenagers on the go, and workplace professionals on their lunch break.

An invite to try

Throughout the Summer I make my way downtown to the Food Truck Friday event, and on several Friday afternoons I frequent various food trucks, always trying something new. Well, one food truck took notice of my blog, and my efforts to support local businesses, and personally invited me out to try their food. Imagine my surprise!

However, the invite came while I was out of town for three months on a business trip, therefore the excitement and anticipation were constantly lingering in the back of my mind. When I finally made it back in town, I immediately sent German, the owner of La Palapa food truck, an email, letting him know when I would be making my visit.

Stationary, but also on the move

La Palapa has been at numerous Food Truck Fridays, but during the week you can find them in the Hong Kong Market parking lot on West 7th Street. This is where I found La Palapa one afternoon. I must say, German was very accommodating! He let me awkwardly take pictures of random treats him and his crew were making, spent time telling me his story, and let me roam around the food truck.

Starting their business in 2017, German and his family always wanted to start a restaurant or bar, but decided to test the waters with a food truck. This is actually an incredibly smart business practice, and allows for both the business owner, and the community, to get a feel for how their product will be received. Without having to generate capital, pay overhead, open a brick and mortar restaurant, invest time and energy in staffing and hoping and praying for a generous grand opening.

Sweet and spicy

During my visit, I ordered their elote, which is grilled street corn on the cob topped with creamy mayo, chili powder and cojita cheese. I also tried their elote en vaso, which is their elote in a cup, as well as their famed mangonada and a strawberry parfait. All of it was delicious! And, the best part was the customer service.

I’ve said this many times before, but I’ll say it again, when you support local, and frequent small businesses, you become part of that family. Choosing to keep your money within your community really does benefit and help uplift awesome restaurants and establishments like this one. Receiving a personal invite from the business owner himself is something you will only get when you shop small. So, I will forever continue the good fight for people like German and his family business!
