Opening its doors almost ten years ago, admittedly, I have never been to Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse. However, after deciding to do an Asian food tour, my husband and I specifically chose this restaurant for our date night last week.

Dinner and a show

Knowing patrons can either order from their standard menu and eat at a private booth or table, or select for a more eventful diner experience, and have your food cooked right in front of you, we chose the latter of the two.

We strategically arrived at Ichiban late afternoon in the middle of the week, so we could avoid the large crowds. Sitting down in front of the grill, we could hear the opening of the hood vent above the grill, and feel the heat starting to build in intensity off the grill itself.

When our cook arrived, he immediately started disassembling his cart he brought with him, prepping the grill for the show that was about to unfold. Along with performing such tricks as “catch the egg” and “the volcano”, he also dropped a beat with his utensils while cooking us an incredible meal.

Rolls and dolls

Altogether, we ordered the Eel roll, California roll, fried Gyoza, and the Teppanyaki Combination, which included ribeye and swordfish. Having never had swordfish before, I was surprised at its intense fishy flavor, almost pungent. Note to self, I will not be ordering this again, but everything else was on point. I absolutely loved the caramelized onions, and marinated ribeye. We will definitely be back, but maybe next time we’ll bring more people.

After, eating I walked around, admiring the artwork, and I especially adored the miniature Japanese dolls, situated in their little individual wall pop-outs. Overall, we enjoyed our visit. It was a very relaxed atmosphere, but I could see the potential for a bachelor party gone wild taking center stage here.
