In our last blog post we talked about Livengoodies, and how Sheli sells her hot cocoa bombs at local coffee shops, well Hawks is one of those said establishments. In fact, I had never heard of Hawks until my “bomb” (pun intended) purchase two months ago.

I knew Sheli opened her popup shop once a week downtown, but what if I wanted her hot cocoa randomly throughout the week? Well, one of her assistants said she sells them at Hawks Coffee Shop in Sergeant Bluff. “Hmmm” I thought, “a local coffee shop close to my work? I’ll have to make an afternoon or morning visit here before my shift”.

A small business supporting other small businesses

So, that’s exactly what I did. Getting up a little earlier than normal, I specifically drove to Hawks, walked in, and was amazed that I had never even heard of this place. How quaint. I ordered what I always do whenever trying a new coffee shop, a hazelnut latte. I do this because I’m familiar with the taste of this beverage, and it helps me easily compare the flavor of what I’m used to, or to what I’ve had in past experiences at other restaurants.

Upon ordering, that’s when I noticed, above their coffee press were bags of Coffee King beans. And then looking around, I saw the lotions and soap I use from Lucy & Woody, jewelry from a local designer, and cupcakes from an at-home baker. So, not only do the owners of Hawks get their coffee bean supply from our talented local coffee roaster, but they also support multiple small businesses within their four walls. You’ve just earner yourself a repeat customer.

An atmosphere for planning

In addition, their miniature gift shop and entry way is decorated with a touch of rustic, but modern, flair. Old pipes and industrial lighting flow effortlessly within a cozy and bright lounge area. This has become one of my favorite stops on my way to work now, and they have a drive thru!

In fact, one of my friends who lives in Sergeant Bluff asked if I would help plan her wedding. And since she lives not even five minutes away from Hawks, I thought what a perfect place for us to meet and gameplan her to do list. Plus, this would give me a chance to order a sandwich off their menu, since, up until then, I had only had their coffee.

We both ordered their shredded chicken panini and strawberry smoothie, picked a spot in their seating area, and got our notebooks out. We spent almost three hours going over details and timelines! Whew! It’s a good thing Hawks serves food in general, and is open until 6pm, because we may have needed to refuel.

Plan your visit

Before I left that afternoon, I grabbed a Star Wars themed hot cocoa ball for my husband, and eyed the menu so I know what to get next time. They have a large breakfast selection, but I think I’ll try their avocado toast first. That sounds light and not too heavy for my morning commute. But I may have to come back for lunch just to try out their $7.00 flatbreads!

With so many beverage, snack and sweet tooth options, I know I’m going to enjoy exploring their culinary skills in the near future. And I hope you are also able to make your way out to Sergeant Bluff, support a local thriving business, and maybe even pick up a thoughtful gift for someone in your life.
