One Thursday afternoon a few weeks ago I decided to drive up to Le Mars, Iowa to visit a few businesses. I knew my first stop in town would be Habitué. Coffee lover is an understatement for me. Instead, coffee is the reason I get up in the morning. I especially love locally roasted and brewed coffee, and embracing the relaxing atmosphere local coffee shops foster.

Prior to my visit I have seen Habitué promoted on facebook and even at the Steins & Veins Beer and Wine Festival, where they had a booth and were selling their coffee. I was not able to sample their beverages at that time, which made me want to visit their establishment even more.

First impressions

When I walked in, I immediately noticed the tall ceiling and welcoming foyer. A fireplace off to the right, with shelves halfway up the wall displaying models of cakes. I did not ask, but I’m assuming they are showcasing cakes they are capable of making for weddings, graduations, and etc.

Cakes to remember

I then remembered that, yes, they do serve coffee, but “Cakes to Remember” is also in their slogan. When you visit their website (https://habituecoffee.com/) you can view both their core menu and beverage options, but also a huge ensemble of cake and cupcake galleries. All of which look impressively professional and personalized. Their cake decorators sure do have talent!

More than just coffee

Back to the coffeehouse. As I walked up to the counter to order I noticed pre-packaged coffee on display, along with house made pastries next to the cash register for those impulse buyers.

Off to the right of the register was a display case full of muffins, scones, almond tarts and bread pudding. It was a tough decision but I decided on two muffins, and I didn’t even get to taste them! My fiancé found the box and demolished them both! Secretly though, I bought them both for him since I know he loves when I come home with treats from my adventures.

I did, however, buy a turkey-cranberry sandwich on marble rye and a strawberry banana smoothie. Don’t worry though, on my way out I ordered a standard hazelnut latte to go, but since we all know they serve coffee, I wanted to initially try something different on their menu.

Feng shui

After I ate my late breakfast I decided to walk around. This place is wholesome and peaceful. Meticulously decorated with cozy furniture and relaxing colors. Trinkets that look like they belong in an inviting home are in every corner, adorning tables and book cases.

There’s a patio past the register off to the left, where, if it wasn’t raining that day, I would have entertained the thought of sitting out there to enjoy my meal.

Divine decor

Walking up the stairs I saw scripture verses printed on the walls, along with biblical scenes painted on canvases which were also mounted on the walls. Upstairs there’s a gathering room for large parties, and even a prayer room. This is when I realized Habitué is a faith-based business! I had not done my research on them before my visit, other than looking over their menu, so this was one extra bonus.

Also, upstairs, past the prayer room is a loft, a sitting room with booths and tables. Guests were enjoying their meals while mingling with their shopping buddies. I saw business men working on their laptops, and peaceful patrons reading books from the Habitué library.

Repeat customer

According to Webster’s Dictionary, “Habitué” is a noun describing a frequent visitor. This is self-evident, and this will undoubtedly be a necessary stop every time I visit Le Mars. I especially love the view from the bay windows looking across the street at the Blue Bunny Ice Cream shop. How pleasant a scene, rain or shine.

Plan your visit

So, when you’re in Le Mars, you must visit Habitué. The staff are inviting and friendly, the ambiance is tranquil and soothing, and the location is right in the heart of downtown Le Mars. Just a block away from jewelry shops and clothing stores, you can grab your favorite cappuccino and saunter up and down Central Ave while you window shop.
