On our last post we explored the Hong Kong Market, today we will be visiting the other large Asian grocery store in town, the Great Wall. Located behind Palmer Candy, this is much larger than Hong Kong Market, with aisles upon aisles of Asian food variations from multiple countries.

Tea up!

Unfortunately, we got stuck in the first aisle for about twenty minutes. My husband is big fan of hot tea, and there were about 80 different assortments of tea, from loose leaf to small individual bags. We had never seen this many varieties in our lives. My husband chose two he wanted to try, but now we know where we’re going for our next selection.

Too many to count

Just like Hong Kong Market, there were canned and jarred goods, pallets of bagged rice, and an impressive noodle section. I’m used to the same noodle options I’ve seen on grocery store shelves the past twenty years, so I was on sensory overload after walking past so many foreign labels. I will definitely have some fun experiments in my near future.

No surprise here when we found a plethora of frozen fish, since that is a major portion of most Asian cultures’ diets. Some fish we had never heard of before, like mudfish and swai, and I was excited to find fish meatballs. I plan on buying a bag, breading and deep frying them, and maybe pairing them with some homemade remoulade sauce.

And just like the Hong Kong Market, the Great Wall had plenty of quail and duck eggs, and, of course, uncommon fruits and veggies, including bamboo and fuzzy squash. Finally, the last aisle we walked down was the dinner and cook wear aisle. Tiny tea cups, soup bowls and an abundance of utensils filled the shelves. Some were beautifully designed with flower print and others were painted with Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese characters.

Plan your visit

In all, my husband and I have found new avenues where from to get our groceries. We have already made a handful of visits back to the Great Wall and Hong Kong Market. My teenage daughter, especially, loves the unique treats we bring home, she somehow usually commandeers and hijacks a bag of candy up to her bedroom.

I hope you are able to adventure out of your comfort zone, try grocery shopping in a different environment, and even discover new foods. And by expanding your pallet to include different flavors, you might just have your spotlight moment to showcase your new-found culinary skills at the next work place pot luck!
