I’ve never been more excited about a month-long blogging adventure than I am about this one. It’s October, and that means pumpkin patches! For the most part pumpkin patches begin their season mid-September, so I’ve already been to a couple, and I must say that all of them are different in their own way. From the souvenirs that are sold, the property size, to what varieties of pumpkins are available for picking.
So, to start our tour we will be visiting Fields of Fun in Sioux Center. I chose this to be my first stop because my cousin Rosie just moved to Rock Valley for a career in agronomy, and the excitement of seeing her and her new house, along with pumpkin hunting, made for a perfect day full of adventure.
Let’s go pumpkin hunting!
Therefore, Rosie and I planned our schedule out, met up in Rock Valley, and off we went to Sioux Center. With no overcast, we were blessed with perfect weather for the day, which also gave us beautiful pictures!
Being that this was the first pumpkin patch I’ve been to in two years, I almost forgot how fun they are. Growing up in the Omaha area, I’ve been privy to many visits to the infamous Vala’s Pumpkin Patch, but that didn’t deter me from supporting smaller locally ran businesses. In fact, I turned down multiple invitations to Vala’s this season because I was determined and focused on staying within the Siouxland area. Plus, I know a lot of families don’t have the means to go all the way to Omaha, so this is a chance to showcase the hidden gems in the surrounding small towns.
Mazed out!
Walking up to the main building, we could see a variety of pumpkins with different colors and shapes. Inside was a large gift shop where locally handmade crafts, candles, soaps and jams. But Rosie and I decided we would first try our hand at escaping all three different corn mazes before we came back to shop for our souvenirs.
Therefore, heading out we first ventured into the kids maze, and then the intermediate, and finally the most difficult. Recommended were maps so we could find our way out, especially for the mega one. And I can gleefully say that we conquered all three!
After our adventures, we walked around the grounds, picking at sunflowers. Rosie is an agronomist, so she spent some time explaining to me the different species of corn, sunflowers and even the weeds that grow. Overall, I really liked the simplicity of this small-town pumpkin patch. It had everything from playgrounds, to petting zoos, and even photoshoot opportunities.
Plan your visit
When you go, make sure to bring enough money to enjoy the mazes, along with a comfy sweatshirt or hoodie. Adult corn maze is $7.00 and the child’s corn maze is $6.00, or you can experience both for $12.00. In addition, there are hayrides for $3.00, fresh apples $2.00 per pound, and of course pumpkins for $.39 cents per pound. And! If you’re looking for even more fun, try your hand at shooting paintballs ($1.00 for 10 paintballs), or even reserve a spot on their property for a bonfire.
There is a list of even more things to do on their property which you can find on their website (https://www.fieldsoffun.net/), and stay up to date throughout the season on daily and weekly specials via their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/fieldsoffun/).
