Once I stocked up on Tiefenthaler bratwursts I made my way to CornerHaus 101 for some much-needed coffee. Making my initial visit in October, I was excited about their fall seasonal menu, and looked forward to trying something new. Personally, I’m always looking for unique experiences that you can only find in these amazing small towns. Whether it be a different dish or drink to try, I’m constantly on the hunt for that one-of-a-kind off-the-beaten-path indulgences. And I found it here in Holstein, Iowa.

Operating their business out of the oldest building in Holstein, owners Adam and Alyssa Dreeszen have been on a mission to serve their community not just coffee in the morning, but also unique cocktails at night. Making my initial trip before work, I decided to save the spirits for another visit, but I did, however, decide to try their homemade chili and a cranberry scone.

Built to last

Knowing I wouldn’t remain the only patron in their coffee shop, I got up and took some pictures of this quaint establishment. With embellished ceilings boasting textured tile-work, this storefront has been lovingly preserved from when it was first Holstein’s Savings Bank in 1896. Fortified as a bank should be, the walls of CornerHaus are four bricks thick, and the self-sustaining structure was built 127 years ago at the cost of $9,000 which would be over $320,000 dollars with the current inflation.

Helping to revitalize downtown Holstein, Adam and Alyssa have an impressive social media presence, which helps bring in patrons from all over Siouxland. In fact, my husband and I are planning a date night soon, and when the weather finally improves, we plan to drive out to CornerHaus 101 for an enjoyable evening on the town. In addition, Adam and Alyssa also help run the State Theater across the street, and were key roles in its restoration.
