One block south from Carpenter Bar on Phillips Avenue is the iconic and Instagramable CH Pâtisserie. Ever since I saw this bakery on a travel vlog feature on one of the Youtube channels I follow, I’ve been wanting to step inside and see what all the hype was about. And I was not disappointed.

CH stands for Chef Hanmer

Opening its doors in 2013, Sioux Falls had no idea what was about to be bestowed to them. As a World Champion Pastry Chef, Chris Hanmer (hence the “CH” in CH Pâtisserie) has created for himself an impressive resume. From winning Season 2 of Top Chef: Just Desserts, to traveling the world competing in internationally culinary events, to even holding the prestigious title of executive pastry chef for the Ritz-Carlton, Chef Hanmer has undoubtedly made a name for himself. Starting out peeling potatoes in a country club at the age of 15, he eventually became the youngest ever American chef to win the gold medal at the World Pastry Team Championship.

After leaving Las Vegas, and deciding to instead open his restaurant in South Dakota, rather than New York City or Los Angeles, Chef Hanmer unilaterally was able to hone his talent at his own pace. Not having to compare and compete with hundreds of other high-end pastry shops and diners, Chef Hanmer has easily and effortlessly established his celebrity status in the Midwest, and currently holds the title of Top 10 Pastry Chefs in America!

A slice of France in South Dakota

Designing his restaurant after what many European patisseries look like, Chef Hanmer also wanted to create pastries that virtually transport you to the corner cafés of Paris. Known for his macrons, Chef Hanmer also sells decadent petit gateaux, which are “small cakes” in French. And some of these cakes are other-worldly! They don’t even look real. Almost like it would be a sin to eat such a beautiful piece of art, but alas they are all edible, meaning you have your choice of carrot cake, vanilla bean, chocolate, and even their seasonal menu.

Upon our visit I opted for a variety macron pack of all twelve of their various flavors, ranging from puppy chow to pistachio to salted caramel. My friend Katie got one of their Chocolate Dream petit gateaux, which, to me, looks like a service bell you find at the front desk of hotels, doctors offices and restaurants.

Plan your visit

In all, this pâtisserie has, hands down, the most elegant pastries I’ve ever seen, and I’ve actually been to Paris! In fact, my husband and I plan on going back up to Sioux Falls for Memorial Day weekend, and we will be making a sweet stop here for some one-of-a-kind delectables.
