On my final visit to Ida Grove I started my day off early knowing I wanted to grab lunch at one of the best places to eat in town, Brownies. Opening its doors in 2017, this small town family owned business has become a staple in Ida Grove.

Brownies does not have any in-door seating, since they are primarily just a drive thru, similar to what Sonic is like. Patrons can, however, walk up to the order window, then sit down to enjoy their food on their front patio facing the street, or gather around the picnic tables watching the drive thru traffic pass them by. This setup served Brownies very well during the pandemic, since they basically didn’t have to change anything about how they serve the public, except increase supplies. In fact, during covid, they were one of the few restaurants to stay open, serving the public their famous burgers and fries. I even found an article written by Fox 44 out of Sioux City, where the owner, Carrie Brown, said this was the busiest she’s ever seen her business.

Eat like royalty

Capitalizing on the castle theme around town, Brownies is housed within a castle-like building, and during my first two visits I remember driving by Brownies, and thinking to myself how adorable it looked, and that I needed to make time to stop by for a late lunch. And I did just that on my final visit in Ida Grove. Purposely going later in the afternoon, I missed the lunch crowd, but I could still tell it had been a busy day, which I love to see. I ordered the crispy chicken sandwich with onion rings, and it did not disappoint.

And actually, while I was waiting for my food I also saw that they serve “Falcon Twisters”, which are similar to a Blizzard at Dairy Queen. I may just have to plan a return trip just to try their flavors. Additionally, this place really does remind me of an old Dairy Queen, where you walk up to the window, order your cone, then go sit on the benches or tailgate in the parking lot.

Plan your visit

Open until 10:00 p.m. on the weekends, I could totally see this being a popular hangout for kids throughout the summer. But make sure you visit Brownies soon, since they are only open seasonally, so make sure you check out their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064109618474). I wouldn’t want you to miss their pizza burger.
