During our entire visit here in Okoboji we had driven past this unbelievably cute gift shop. Looking up places to visit and businesses to support, I found The Barn Swallow, and then also realized how close it was to our hotel. Therefore, after packing our bags and checking out of the Vintage Inn and Suites, we made this our first stop of the morning. Even before breakfast!

Encompassing three levels, this is unlike any gift shop I’ve ever been in. The attention to detail, and the hard work of both landscape artists and interior designers is ever present. There is so much to see here, and if you haven’t found your souvenir by the end of your trip in Okoboji, then head over to The Barn Swallow. They have something for everyone.

Books and Beyond

When we first walked in, I was brought all the way back to my third-grade self, sitting at the feet of Miss Soliday, listening to her read us stories of The Box Car Children. I absolutely adored this book series, and now that I know where I can purchase the entire collection, I may have to make a special trip come Christmas time!

And these aren’t the only books available for purchase, children’s fables, storytelling, non-fiction, and even mystery novels are scattered throughout. Weaving in and out of various rooms, we found handmade soaps and lotions, jams and jellies, and candles and lamps.

My personal favorite were all the beach and lakefront inspired artwork. We loved the textured canvases, giving each painting a 3D effect. In fact, we both agreed, that after we finish our bathroom remodel, we will be back up to browse their collection.

And there were so many Okoboji sweaters, t-shirts and hats to choose from, all with different designs, colors and patterns. Every corner I turned, there was a new and different clothing rack display. So, my advice, make an initial walk through first, then go back around to choose which t-shirt or long sleeve you like the most.

The main level has the majority of your Okoboji souvenir clothing to choose from, but as stated before there are is an upper level, and basement. There is also a large collection of children’s clothes on the third level, along with games and books for all ages. And in the basement are discounted and clearance items.

Gifts galore

In addition, the business owners of The Barn Swallow have strategically taken advantage of the Christmas Season and its popularity, and sell tree and fireplace ornaments year-found, as well as holiday gifts for everyone.

Stuffed literally to the rafters are knick-knacks, trinkets, and wall decals. Key chains, coffee mugs and cutting boards line the walls inside, with garden gnomes, yard stakes and lawn ornaments on parade outside. A stone path weaves in and out of blooming flowers and a small pond with a bridge sits right outside an open-air porch.

Plan your visit

When you make your visit to Okoboji this place is a must-see. The next time we drive up we may just stop here first before even heading to our hotel. This way we can get a new book to read, check off our birthday and Christmas gift lists, and even a comfy sweatshirt to wear.

Finally, visit their website (https://barnswallowonline.net/) to learn more about their 43-year history and check out all the gifts they sell, from puzzles to purses. Also, make your way over to their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/BarnSwallowOkoboji/) for weekly sales.
