I’ve known about this park ever since I moved to Sioux City in 2011. I have even ran the 3-mile trail multiple times. The paved trail, hilly landscape, and the abundance of shade trees, makes this one of my most favorite places to enjoy an afternoon. And it’s for FREE!

Fun for all

As you park your car, you’ll notice nearby there is a dog park for you furry friends to socialize and exacerbate some energy before or after a stroll through Bacon Creek. And, yes, the park is dog friendly! Just be sure to clean up the evidence!

At the beginning of your walk, you’re welcomed by picnic tables, public restrooms and playgrounds. This would be a wonderful place to hold an outdoor event during the Spring when everything is in bloom, or even the Fall when all the trees are turning red, gold and orange.

Wildlife adventures

When you take your walk through this park, don’t be surprised if you have a friendly partner on your stroll. Because of the beautiful man-made lake, this park is known for its geese and ducks. You may also catch fishing activities along the banks of Bacon Creek Lake. The last time we were there we encountered a grandfather and grandson fishing from one of the many docks that border the banks of the lake. Even my husband, step-son, and brother-in-law have gone on many fishing adventures within this park.

Along the way you’ll see more than just birds, how about cows? Flanking the Bacon Creek property is a private residence which raises cattle. Not knowing they were there, I remember walking along the trail, and stopping after hearing movement within the trees. Imagine my amazement when I noticed several bovines peeking through the foliage!

Ecology 101

Expect your visit to become educational, since there are multiple environments represented along this 3-mile trail. Signs explaining these ecosystems highlight the uniqueness of this city oasis. When we came upon the “Wet Wonderland” we snagged a picture of a turtle! And for the “Woodland Community” we were amazed by the protective layer of shrub canopy protecting the ground around the trees, it was vast, and never ending.

Scenic treck and trail

Alas, there is a creek in Bacon Creek, and a cute bridge awaits you upon your crossing. Shortly afterwards is a roundabout among the trees. This park truly has one of the most scenic trails in Siouxland, and with it being kid-friendly and dog-friendly, it’s no wonder Bacon Creek has become a must-see for visitors.

Plan your visit

There is always a lot to see and do here, and every time we go the parking lot is always busy. Meeting you along the way are endurance runners and leisurely joggers. If you are looking for a safe and semi-challenging brisk walk, this paved trail is a great way for beginners to build up their activity level.
