At the helm of this literary and gaming sanctuary is Mike Phelan, a former educator whose passion for teaching transcended into creating a space that fosters creativity, imagination, and community engagement. After spending a significant portion of his career in various teaching roles, including lecturing on linguistics at Ohio State University, Phelan found a new calling in the heart of Vermillion.

The idea for Outside of a Dog Books & Games germinated from a realization that there was a gap in the market—a literary bookstore in a college town was notably absent. It was Phelan’s wife, Jennifer, who envisioned the possibility of bringing such a space to life. Little did they know that this idea would blossom into a vibrant community center for book lovers and gamers alike.

Opening a bookstore comes with its own set of challenges, from learning how to curate and sell products to finding the perfect physical space. Phelan, however, didn’t navigate this journey alone. The Vermillion community and the Vermillion Area Chamber and Development Company rallied around the cause. Through a crowd-funding campaign, Outside of a Dog Books & Games raised over $12,000, symbolizing the collective support of a community eager to have its own literary and gaming haven.
