On our last post we visited the Sioux City Farmer’s Market, meeting several small business owners and local farmers. However today we are visiting two of my favorite farmers whom I purchase from regularly throughout the summer season.

Rick’s Produce

The first is Rick’s Produce, situated outside of the Hamilton Boulevard Bomgaars in a bright yellow tent. This is my go-to local producer throughout the season, and it is practically a landmark amidst the busy Northside. I look forward to making my weekly visit here where I know I will get THE BEST sweet corn around! We have learned to never buy our corn from the grocery store, and to come early because they regularly run out of their amazing corn.

We have also purchased their cantaloupe, watermelon, onions and eggplant, all of which are organic and noticeably higher quality than anything you can find at the grocery store. Something else you won’t find at any grocery store chain is unmatchable customer service. When you shop local and support your area farmers you get a chance to meet their families and get to know them by name.

Making their way from Salix every day during the summer season, they are open from May to September, which means by the time you are reading this they may already be closed, but now you know what to look for when they reopen in the spring.

Country Market

However, if you missed Rick’s Produce, you have another chance to purchase your fresh produce at another local farmer, Country Market. Located further down Hamilton in a green tent is a well-organized farmer, Tammy and Randy, and their family. Easy to find, this hopping place is right outside of the Dollar Tree next to Domino’s Pizza and Scooter’s Coffee.

Known to sell a plethora of fruits and veggies, they also have a small assortment of crafts and holiday gift ideas. So, after grabbing a coffee at the nearby Scooters and some shopping for school supplies at the Dollar Tree, head over to Tammy for some dinner inspiration.

I ended up purchasing some of the best tomatoes I’ve ever had, along with a bottle of their homemade lotion. And then I saw they sold bars of soaps, and if you know me, you know I only use bar soap in my house, and I love trying new product always. So, I had to bought some to try, and ended up loving it!

Plan your visit

In our search for alternative places to buy our groceries we have found two local farmers on Hamilton Boulevard. Both are easy to find, and each have their own websites and social media presence. Checkout their Facebook pages below for seasonal hours and weekly specials. Make your plans to get creative next summer and surprise your family with locally grown and great tasting fruits and veggies.
