Taco’s El Guero

Literally ten blocks down from my house is one downtown restaurant I wish I had tried earlier. When I took on this month-long challenge, Taco’s El Guero was one of the first restaurants on my list. My step-daughter always gets their wet burrito, and on their facebook page, I noticed they had family platters. Well, this is perfect timing, because I planned to order a burrito and taco family platter with fries, and their famous wet burrito.

Wet Burrito? and a massive family platter!

I know a wet burrito does not sound very appealing; however, it consists of your choice of meat, topped in red or white sauce. My step-daughter adamantly declared the white sauce is far superior, so I ordered and steak burrito, with white sauce, and I must agree, it was very impressive.

As for the family platter, it consisted of two beef burritos, six steak tacos, and a huge helping of fries. If you order this platter, you can also choose rice and beans, but fries are always kid-friendly, and we have been eating a lot of beans and rice during this restaurant tour all month long, so it was nice to give our palettes a break.

At this point, I had tried about ten different Mexican restaurants, and El Guero’s seasoning in all their entrées we tried tasted exceptional, and much more authentic than the others. I was very impressed with the spice, it was not overbearing or dull, rather, perfectly balanced.

Additionally, I loved that they offer family-sized platters, since not many restaurants have that option. As a parent who cooks almost every day for our family, this will be something to order again in the near future.

Planning future visits

Tonight, we ordered to go, however, I look forward to planning my dine-in experience. This would be a nice lunch break while exploring downtown Sioux City. In addition, this is a local establishment that I plan to show my support for years to come.

La Fiesta Charra

Now, off to our next stop. Opening around seven years ago, by a family that used to live in the same apartment complex I lived in while dating my now husband. This became one of our favorite places to eat, and since it was considerably close to my apartment in Leeds, it was always a pleasure walking in and recognizing the owners.

old faithful

Out of all the Mexican restaurants on our list this month, this is the one that I have been to the most. We used to eat here more than once a month which is a lot for us, since we are both money conscious, and usually cook at home every night.

So, when I heard that they were serving margaritas to go, I knew this was my chance to revisit their menu again, and enjoy a drink in the comfort of my living room. Ordering, their steak fajitas and steak quesadilla, my husband I enjoyed our simple meal for two.

no more take-out meals!

In addition, when I went to pick up my order, La Fiesta Charra was open for dine-in, with obvious restrictions for half capacity and social distancing, but it was still nice to see customers sitting in the booths enjoying their meals.

With our month-long journey almost over, and Summer plans in the works, it might be until the beginning of Fall when we make our return visit, but this time we will definitely select for the dining experience in person!
