You mention to anyone here in Sioux City that you ate at Sneaky’s, you’ll get a universal response, “I love that place!” Sneaky’s is an institution in this town, and has been creating a legacy since it opened in 1979.
A friend and I decided to have lunch here yesterday since I am trying to find a caterer for my wedding. Even though I’ve lived here in Sioux City for over ten years, I’ve only ordered their chicken to go, I’ve never ate inside their restaurant.
First Impressions
As soon as we walked in, we were immediately greeted by a waitress “Hi ladies! Sit anywhere you’d like”. We decided to sit at the bar, this ended up being an excellent choice. My friend got their lunch buffet, and I ordered their chicken salad.
Their chicken was delightful. It is never dry, and the juices are locked in, giving it a unique flavor. To clarify, even though we both ate chicken, they have Salisbury Steak, Popcorn Fish, and much more.
Coincidentally, Christy was working the bar, and we struck up a conversation. She informed us of Sneaky’s history, and that her parents started the business 40 years ago. In fact, they will be having their 40th anniversary celebration in the Spring of this year.
Homemade Recipes
When I got my salad, Christy told me the bleu cheese dressing I ordered is her grandmother’s recipe, and that there are multiple recipe cards in the restaurant’s kitchen with her grandmother’s handwriting. Not only is the bleu cheese an original recipe, but so are the mosticolli, macaroni and potato salads, among others.
Not Just a Diner
As I walked around to read the numerous quotes on the walls, I got a sense that this is where locals go. I saw business men in suits, construction workers, ladies out to lunch and young adults chatting it up.
Henceforth, this place truly is an heirloom. The owners and staff have given so much of themselves to the community, and by doing so, they have made the Sneaky’s name invaluable to Sioux City and Siouxland.
National News
In addition, Sneaky’s even made it to national news! In 2014 the Huffington Post wrote an article regarding Sneaky’s Wednesday night special. Patrons who put their cell phone in a basket near the front of the restaurant, and don’t look at it until they leave, get 10% off their entire bill.
You can read more about this on their website (http://www.sneakyschicken.com). And while you’re there learn about their journey and history, and don’t forget to check out their restaurant and catering menus. They have much more than chicken!
