The Cottage

Located in downtown Denison are a handful of shopping opportunities if you are looking for a gift this upcoming Valentine’s Day or maybe even Mother’s and Father’s Day coming up. In this post we will be looking at five establishments to patron this year, and in no particular order, we are starting off with our first location, The Cottage.

Having a strategic location on Broadway, The Cottage is a quaint catch all for anyone looking to purchase a rustic souvenir, holiday snacks and even children’s toys. Located across the street from the town coffee shop, this is the perfect first stop during your busy day of shopping and supporting local businesses.

While my husband and I were there we picked up a popcorn sample set and a red cardinal Christmas ornament. We even explored the second floor downstairs where we were privy to an impressive assortment of colorful vases of varying shapes and sizes. Owned by Taylor and her mom, this is a must-visit for anyone in town for the day looking to spruce up their interior décor, or even pick up an affordable gift.

For more information on upcoming sales and specials visit their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/thecottagedenison/), where you can also check out their every-changing inventory and keep up on the next new seasonal interior decorating item you never knew you needed.

The Male Room

Zig-zagging our way down Broadway let’s head back across the street to the Male Room. Such a unique name for this retail store, the Male Room happens to be one of the few men’s only clothing stores I’ve came across in my adventures throughout Siouxland.

Owned and operated by Don, the Male Room carries all your clothing needs, from fashionable button downs, graphic tees, cologne and even silk ties to complete your Valentine’s date night attire. And speaking of silk ties, Don also offers tuxedo rentals, making this the place to go for young adults looking to impress their Homecoming date.

Personally, I love the logo and the versatility of Don’s business. I am also impressed that he is able and willing to order in a style or size of your choice. In fact, one of the first things I did when I was there is look for 2XL sizes, which he has plenty of, and which also shows me he has an array of options for many of Denison’s residents and beyond.

If you’d like to check out his online inventory, check out his website (https://the-male-room.business.site/) and Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063489431867). And if you happen to make it to town bring a rooster or chicken figurine to add to Don’s secret collection which he displays throughout his store.

The Boutique

Continuing down Broadway we come upon the brick building where we will be visiting two businesses. It’s like a two-for-one, and their both owned by the same family. In my opinion, I especially love to see small business owners expanding and dominating the market like these ladies have.

Starting with The Shop, I initially noticed how homey the atmosphere felt, and I immediately found something I loved, handmade car potpourri! Let’s go! If there’s anything I love more, it is getting into a pleasant-smelling car. In addition, the vendor who makes the car scents also makes sage kits, burn sticks, affirmation cards and so much more.

I also noticed all the clothing in this shop are thrifted, which is so awesome. Recycling and reselling are so much better than having it end up in the landfill. And finally, handmade soaps and candles, along with creatively designed tumblers. With so much to choose from, this would be the perfect stop for those looking to gift something unique and one-of-a-kind.

Totally You Boutique

Across the hallway is their sister store. More of a high-end retailer, this is like the big sister to The Store, and leaves the shopper, such as yourself, with no regrets. If you like both thrifted clothing items and updating your wardrobe with the newest fashions, then look no further.

Opting to supply their storefront with the most up-to-date (recent) seasonal fashions, this store is more for the chic shoppers wanting to stay on top of today’s trends. Geared more towards clothing items, patrons can find a select few décor pieces to spruce up their living room fireplace mantel.

Interestingly, Totally You Boutique has a public group with over 4,000 members on Facebook! So check them out, otherwise you’ll miss their new arrivals and monthly specials.

Reynold’s Clothing

Last on our list, and probably the most recognized name in Denison is Reynolds. Operating in this Midwest town for the past 50 years, this clothing retailer has been a leading name in men’s and, more recently, women’s fashion.

Opening their doors in 1972, Reynolds originally focused their clothing line to service the men in Denison’s community. Being one of the few places for men to go and comfortably shop, this establishment has undoubtedly helped hundreds of Siouxlanders dress for success.

Owned by brothers Troy and Brett, Reynolds has become a respected name in men’s and women’s fashions. So much so, that patrons from nearly an hour out will travel to Denison just to shop at this locally owned small business.

Built out of the old JC Penney’s that used to be the downtown theater, Reynolds has an impressive 8,000 square feet to work with. Acquiring inventory from recognizable brands such as Under Armor and Redwing, Reynolds gets shipments in every week. In fact, while I was there Troy received a large shipment in from Fedex and informed me that they were getting ready to change out their inventory and getting ready for spring and summer.

Of all the businesses in this blog post, Reynold’s, by far, has the biggest online presence. That is to be expected being that they are a second-generation family-owned business which just this past fall celebrated their 50-year anniversary of being in business.

You can read about this celebration on Denison’s Bulletin Review here: (https://dbrnews.com/news/50-years-and-growing-reynold-s-clothing-a-mainstay-of-crawford-county/article_85726dea-4fc1-11ed-806e-db009179186d.html).

Also, make sure to visit their website (https://www.reynoldsclothing.com/) where you can shop for every occasion, from gearing up for an eventful summer, to getting ready for your friend’s wedding. And check out their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057067886375) where Tony and Brett often go live to announce upcoming arrivals and weekly sales events.

Plan you visit

Overall, I was, as always when it comes to these small Midwest towns, pleasantly surprised to find more than just one or two shopping opportunities for patrons wanting something different. Once this wretched winter passes and spring peaks its head out, I can image how much cabin fever we all will have, which means you’ll need an outlet for all that pent-up energy. So, why not take to the road and make it a day of journeying to this growing Iowa town and spend an afternoon shopping.
