Back again is the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Women’s Volleyball National Championship. This will be the 40th Championship, and the 12th year Sioux City has hosted the tournament. With 32 teams from all over the country competing for the national title, we are anticipating an influx of visitors to the Siouxland area.

How many people?

Sponsored by the South Sioux City Riverfront Marriott Hotel, tournaments will be held all week at the downtown Tyson Events Center. From Tuesday, December 3rd to Saturday, December 7th, our city is inundated with coaches, staffing, and impressively talented ladies. Almost all teams will be bringing their families, friends and dedicated fans.

Total, there’s an estimated 21,000 visitors swarming local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and attractions, bringing much needed revenue to our ever-changing, and growing, city.

How much money does this tournament bring to Siouxland?

Welcoming this economic surge, Sioux City and its surrounding towns are predicted to generate $10 million to $11 million in profitability from the NAIA Championship. That’s an incredible amount of monetary value poured back into our economy.

The 32 teams

Our very own Morningside College, and Orange City’s Northwestern College, are competing against schools as far away as California and Montana, to Kentucky and Georgia.

Pools and brackets

All teams are placed into eight pools, which then compete in a round-robin pool play. From these pools, the top two teams will advance to the single-elimination bracket, followed by the semi-final matches, and finally the tournament championship.

My experiences

Because the bank I used to work for helped sponsor the NAIA Championship, we received VIP passes two years in a row! Allowed to access the VIP tents, enjoy refreshments, and take home NAIA souvenirs, we were also allowed on the courts to interact with the crowd. I quite enjoyed the excitement.

Plan your visit

Tournaments will be going on all week, day and night, so make sure you give yourself time to support these ladies and their dreams to win title. It’s always fun to root on our local schools, but it’s even more fun to see their agility, determination, and athletic abilities.
