On our last blog post about the Riverfront I eluded that the corresponding trail running parallel to the river eventually leads into Riverside Park. Perfect transition since today we will be visiting the oldest park in Sioux City, Riverside Park.
A Sioux City Original
Established during the founding of Sioux City, this park has a long history dating back to the late 1800s. Known for its Boat Club during the early 1900s, Riverside Park was also the location of Sioux City’s very own amusement park and Interstate Fair. In fact, during the 1920s, this fair would become the largest privately owned fair in the nation. The Ringling Brothers even bathed their circus elephants here on the river’s shore!
Along with hosting the annual Sioux City Art Center’s Art Splash and a handful of craft and cultural fairs, such as the Asian Fest, Riverside Park has been popular with family gatherings, and school day camps. Offering a little bit of everything from history, picnics, playgrounds to even a popular neighborhood pool, this park has something for everyone.
Bruguier’s Cabin
To start, let’s look at one of the most iconic features of Riverside Park, Bruguier’s Cabin. Standing as the oldest structure in Sioux City, this was the actual home of Theophile Bruguier, the first white settler to this area. Built in 1849, the Bruguier Cabin was later covered with wood veneer and plaster, eventually forgotten about, and nearly lost to demolition. In 1934, workmen who were looking for old wood to reclaim came upon this gem. Realizing what they had stumbled upon, they contacted a conservation group who, in turn, carefully moved this historic marker to its current safe location in Riverside Park.
A day at the park
As you drive through the winding frontage roads that connect parking lots and playgrounds, you pass by several picnic tables dotting the landscape, as well as covered shelters. Available for rent, undoubtedly, any of these shelters would be an ideal location for an eventful outdoor family reunion. Spanning 100 acres, this sprawling park also includes volleyball and tennis courts, baseball diamonds and soccer fields.
Riverside Pool and Miracle Field
If cooling down during the hot summer months is number one on your itinerary, you’re in luck because the Riverside Pool and Splash Pad are the “go to” here in Sioux City. Highly favored with locals and visitors, this has become a frequent stop for children and young adults of all ages during summer break.
Didn’t pack your swimsuit? No worries! Plan a day at the Miracle Field and your kids will thank you. Encompassing an all-inclusive playground, mini golf course and a concession stand, this unique hideaway can also be rented out for an epic birthday party. And since an LED screen is available upon request, you could wind down the night with a children’s movie marathon.
Plan your visit
Out of all the parks on our list, Riverside Park offers more amenities than all the others. More than just a trail to walk, run or bike, this beloved favorite has grown into an iconic institution. I hope you are able to enjoy an Autumn day admiring the Fall colors all around this park, and start next Summer’s plans now so you don’t get left behind!
