You probably expected me to start off our tour of the “Queen City” with Falls Park, after all it’s in the city’s name, and it’s what Sioux Falls is known for. Therefore, let’s explore this amazing natural wonder situated steps from the downtown business district.

Center of attention

Because it is so easily accessible, multiple travel sites advise first time visitors to make this either their first or only stop if they are short on time. And amazingly, the Big Sioux River runs directly through the city, carving its way through rock quarries and land formations to create a series of miniature water falls, allowing you to walk right up to the river itself and dip your toes in the water.

A popular place for graduation and wedding photos, as well as hiking and sightseeing, there is something for everyone here. Even the historian in your family will love the Queen Bee Mill brick foundation remains, and its historical significance attributed to the city’s success and growth.

Queen Bee Mill

In fact, the ruins were once part of a seven-story wheat mill which processed 1,500 bushels daily. Built in 1881, this was once the largest in the nation. Then, after being converted into a warehouse, it eventually burned down in 1956 after a massive fire swept through the property. Now, to protect this relic of the past, the 140-year-old Sioux quartzite stone structure has been closed off.

Along with the Queen Bee Mill, the 123-acre Falls Park also encompasses an open-air shelter, an overlook giving you a bird’s eye view of this beautiful natural wonder, a Horse Barn which is home to the Stockyards Ag Experience, and an information visitors centers. And with over 20 miles of trails, there is a lot to do at the Falls Park, meaning you can spend half a day here traversing in and around this scenic landscape.

Plan your visit

Finally, if you are interested, feel free to read up on the parks history and further amenities. In addition, the park will be going through a Spring and Summer remodel, updating pathways and hiking trails, so stay tuned for upcoming events. And if you plan to visit around Christmas time, you’ll be entertained with a Winter Wonderland of colorful bright lights.
