Downtown Coffee & Cream was the very first place I stopped during my four-day journey in Onawa, and it totally makes sense that I needed to start off my adventures with some caffeine, so stopping here was practically a no-brainer. I also was slightly hungry, enough that I needed some sustenance, and there was not a lot of places open during the afternoon in Onawa for a quick bite, so I was very thankful that Shawna and Ryan, a husband-and-wife team, of Downtown Coffee & Cream, created a picnic-on-the-go lunch box. it was the perfect amount to give me the energy I needed to propel me through the rest of my day.
During my initial visit, I did not realize that the young adults working behind the counter were Shawna and Ryan’s kids, which makes this place even more endearing, and made me fall even more in love with this family-owned and operated small town local business. Along with employing their young adult children, Shawna and Ryan also have help running their business from another local family who splits the days up allowing everyone to not get burnt out.

Opening its doors only a year ago, Downtown Coffee & Cream may very well be one of the reasons Onawa is gaining momentum and traction with the surrounding communities. What better way to bring people together than with coffee! I love the interior design and the comfy atmosphere. In fact, while I was enjoying my light lunch, across from me were teenagers huddled up on a couch conversing about, what else? the upcoming Monona County Fair, of course! Nah, just kidding, I have no idea actually, but I cannot be more thrilled to know that Shawna and her family have created a safe and welcoming environment for the patrons in her small town.
In addition, being the matriarch of such a young family, you can guarantee Shawna stays current with social media. Check out Downtown Coffee & Cream’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/downtowncoffeeandcream/) for weekly specials, as well as upcoming events. And don’t forget about their ice cream! I have yet to have some, but that’s all the more reason to plan my return visit. With handmade waffle cones, and a plethora of toppings to select from, I’m not sure how I’ll be able to choose a flavor. In fact, Downtown Coffee & Cream go above and beyond to support another family owned and operated small business, Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream based out of Madison, Wisconsin. Earning the title “super premium ice cream”, Chocolate Shoppe has garnered multiple awards with their 100 plus flavors and their drive for perfection, which is why it was selected by Shawna and her team.
