Stretching along the Missouri River, this peaceful 5-mile long paved trail is undoubtedly the most popular amongst all the parks featured in this series. Visitors and locals alike come here to fish, leisurely walk, and practice their kite flying skills.

So much to see!

Along the riverfront are playgrounds perfect for spending an afternoon with your kids, as well as teaching them about Siouxland history at the Riverboat Museum and both South Bottoms and Flight 232 Memorials. Watch their amazement as you drive under the Veterans Bridge, as well as their enjoyment as they smell the flowers at the Pavilion.

When I have friends and family drive in from out of town, this is one of the first places I take them to, so they can experience some of Sioux City’s best views. In addition to the afore mentioned spots along the riverfront, I always make time to tour the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Free to the public, the various informative exhibits here are perfect for an afternoon of hands-on learning.

Under Development

However, there is more to the Chris Larsen Park, and this deceivingly long riverfront trail, which leads further west and runs parallel to Interstate 29. Eventually leading right into Riverside Park, this area is currently being remodeled to improve the aesthetics of the trail and scenic landscape. So, if you go in the near future you may notice a lot of construction activity, but be patient, because the end result will be worth waiting for.

Also, under construction and a few miles down past the Pavilion, near the Floyd Blvd intersection, is the east side of the riverside trail. Plans for improvement are posted on large advertisement signs, giving residents and visitors a snapshot of what is to come. There are even plans to install a Ferris wheel! How exciting!

The Future Awaits

When development and enhancement to the trail are complete, this will bring in much needed tourism to Sioux City. Expanding this already beautiful area is sure to add economic incentives for local businesses to partner up with the Sioux City parks and recreation. I could see a board walk being installed along with the Ferris wheel, and a small riverfront shopping mall filled with souvenir shops selling merchandise only found in Siouxland.

Plan Your Visit

I hope you are able to venture out and make your way out to the Chris Larsen Riverfront Park, and I invite you to explore the paved trail.
