Welcome to “Brew in June”!

For the entire month of June, we will be traversing all across Siouxland to various breweries, getting to know the owners and learning about each brewery’s history. Surprisingly, I have yet to visit any of our breweries here in Sioux City, but alas, the wait is over.

Marty’s Tap

And first on our list is Marty’s Tap, which is the home of Brioux City. Founded by owner Kelly Quinn, this is a tiny brewery operating out of Marty’s Tap, but making a big statement in our humble corner of Iowa. Starting out of their house, friends Quinn and Matt Hubert began their humble adventure, and ten years later have grown their business into what it is now.

Eventually, Hubert left, leaving the business to Quinn, who on the day I planned my visit hosted a brewing class from WITT, one of our local colleges. Quinn has also been seen at beer festivals, partnering with local businesses, and even mentoring other breweries new to the beer scene.

Therefore, since I happened to have a random Monday off from work, I decided to check out my first brewery, and Marty’s Tap happened to be the only one open, so I took that as my que to head on over. Greeted by bartender Gary, I talked with him about Quinn and his Brioux City brewery, all the different beers he has on tap, and decided to try not one, but two flights.

My first flight…and then my second

From left to right, the first flight was Blazed jalapeño pineapple IPA, Bandshell pale ale, and Berry Sagittarius kettle sour. Not normally an IPA girl, I was quite impressed with the heat of the jalepeno, and that pale ale was smooth, plus I liked the reference to our beloved Grandview Park Bandshell. Finally, my favorite in this trilogy was the sour. Surprisingly, I have grown quite fond of sours this past year, and since it is Summer, these pair perfect with the sweltering heat.

Seeing that they had a pilsner, another sour and a blue cider on tap as well, I had to try another flight. Therefore, from left to right on this flight was Pierce Street Pilsner, Siren Seafoam Sparkles hard cider, and Banana Cream Pie sour. I have to say this was a much better selection than the first flight.

Having never tried a pilsner that I can think of, Pierce Street pilsner was super smooth and probably my favorite of the three in this flight, which surprised me more than anything. The Seafoam cider, is from Sacrilegious, a local brewery out of Glenwood, Iowa, and this blue siren tasted like berries, was super sweet and went down quite easy. If I didn’t have self-control, this little guy could get me in trouble. And finally, the Banana Cream Pie sour was a creative twist on traditional sours, but also brought full balanced flavor.

Plan your visit

In all, I loved the inviting and friendly atmosphere of this neighborhood bar. Gary, a retired firefighter and part-time bartender, was very accommodating and knew quite a lot about beers himself. He even invited me back, saying “I’m always here on Mondays, so come on back, and bring your husband”. I’ll have to do just that, and maybe even play some darts then relax on their covered patio.
