Beginning our first full day in Okoboji, my husband and I got up early, had breakfast, then ventured out. Even though we didn’t get a chance to visit Arnold’s Park, we did, however, make Arnolds Park Funhouse Museum our first stop of the day.
Founder, Wesley Arnold
Originating in 1882 soon after the advent of the railroad in 1874, Arnolds Park has grown into a Midwest sensation. Taking advantage of a golden opportunity, Wesley Arnold decided to capitalize on seasonal Summer tourists, and turned his personal home into an inn for tenting parties.
From 1882 to 1901 a hotel, souvenir shop, pavilion, and cottages were built, thus expanding the park with yearly improvements. The park was growing fast, and guests could anticipate a new addition each time they came back to visit.
Remnants from long ago
Among the many artifacts on display, are wooden horses from the 1915 merry-go-round, and roller skates from the Majestic Roller Rink built in 1919.
Salvaging vintage signs and colorful prize toys from the early years of Arnolds Park, the museum founders sought to preserve a piece of history. Also, on display are amusement rides and several pin-ball games that thrilled children and young adults from bygone years.
My husband and I quite enjoyed walking around reminiscing on the bright and cheerful colors which, we remember, were ever-present during the 70s and 80s. Decorating the walls are posters promoting local bands from another era, as well as, entrance signs to kiddie rides and concession stands.
Plan your visit
While we spent about an hour walking around, reading about the park’s history, you could easily spend an afternoon here. And since it is connected to the Maritime Museum and the Rock N’ Roll Museum, this would be a welcome respite from the hot Summer heat. Head indoors, learn a little more about Iowa and Siouxland, and let your kids enjoy some hands-on learning.
