Crazy as it sounds, the same day I drove to Norfolk, I also drove to Marcus, Iowa. So, altogether, that was about six hours of driving in one day! The things I do for this area travel bog, and to bring pumpkin patches to life and to your screen.
The Marcus pumpkin patch was the smallest of all five, but surprisingly had the most pumpkin variety for sale. Growing over 50 different kinds of pumpkins and over 70 varieties of gourds, my personal favorite was the goose-neck gourds. Inside this large barn that the Hoefling family built themselves, were hundreds of locally handmade crafts, jellies, honey and snacks. I grabbed some pumpkin bread that my husband and I enjoyed that night, and both agreed that it was some of the best we’ve ever tried.
Let’s give them Pumpkin to talk about
Even though this was the smallest pumpkin patch in the area, I liked the simplicity and creativity of the Fall and Halloween decorations. From the large white “I am thankful for…” pumpkin out front with all the signatures and messages written on it from visitors, to the family of skeletons climbing the side of the barn.
Plus, knowing that they open relatively early in the season, usually the last week of September, there’s really no need for me to go shopping at big box stores for crafts and decorations, when I have a local business, I can buy the same products from, only half an hour away. Be sure, however, to check their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/TheHoeflingPumpkinPatch) and keep up-to-date on upcoming events and next season’s exciting adventures.
Plan your visit
Hoefling’s pumpkin patch started small and has grown over the years. There is even an antique corn sheller so children can learn what it was like to shell corn before electricity! In addition, there is also pumpkin bowling, and even a hay rack ride through their haunted forest. However, because of the undesirable weather today, I decided to forgo a ride this time, but since this pumpkin patch is the closest to Sioux City, I will definitely be making a return trip next year.
