This has to be one of my most favorite places in all of Sioux City. I live fairly close to the Art Center, and make my way there at least once a month to check out new exhibits, and admire the outdoor sculptures.

supporting local artists
Free to the public, this is, by far, one of my top five places I bring friends and family from out of town. Supporting local and Midwest artists, the Art Center primarily showcases collections from nearby artists. Occasionally, the center will have an exhibit that has international recognition, but most of the art on display reflects Siouxland and its surrounding landscape.
groundbreaking beginnings
Construction began in 1991, and costing $9.2 million dollars, the Sioux City Art Center was open to the public in 1997, and an approximate 80,000 visitors came to see this newly built museum in the first year alone. That’s the current population of Sioux City! In fact, in 2001, the Art Center received Iowa’s Tourism and Arts Award for this monumental cultural attraction.
However, the Art Center traces its beginnings all the way back to 1937 when the Art Center Association of Sioux City received a grant to form the first art center. Backed by community support, as well as the Sioux City Junior League, the need to preserve Sioux City’s art and history had begun.
Grant Wood
One of my all-time favorite artists is Grant Wood. I remember my mom getting me a t-shirt with his famous Stone City, Iowa painting embellished on the front. For me, this painting defines my childhood, and brings back many memories of my early teenage years. Therefore, any reference to Grant Wood, and my heart flutters since he is an incredibly talented artist.
a true hidden treasure!
Allow me to introduce you to the Corn Room murals. Eugene Eppley, of Omaha, asked Grant Wood to paint several murals which would be on display in hotels all around Iowa, including here in Sioux City. On display in the downtown Martin Hotel dining room, the murals were eventually papered over in the early 1950s and forgotten about. But then! While interviewing Wood’s assistant, an interviewer from the Siouxland Oral History Program learned that these murals still existed, and were hidden. This is like finding a treasure map!
The murals were eventually removed, preserved and remain on permanent display in their own exhibition room in the Art Center. It is literally like walking into a time capsule. We, here in Sioux City, are privy to a remarkable artifact that has been protected and maintained by dedicated historians.
further reading
Reading wikipedia’s article on the Art Center, I am amazed by the center’s influential impact it has had on our community and the surrounding area. There is so much more information I did not elude to, but if you get a chance to read about this museum, you’ll begin to understand its cultural significance. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sioux_City_Art_Center
art splash
The Art Center is not just a museum, it’s also actively engaged in our community. For example, Art Splash, occurring annually on the first weekend in September, is more than just an art festival. Enjoy an afternoon supporting local artists, get involved with non-profit organizations, and even “make and take” at several hands-on booths.
Sculpt Siouxland
Sculpt Siouxland is another way the Art Center embraces the public. I’ve gone on several walks all around downtown admiring the various unique sculptures on almost every corner. Strategically placing these sculptures in and around our historic downtown, allows locals, art enthusiasts and visitors to familiarize themselves with our city, and even discover a new business on their adventure.
take a class
Finally, take a pottery class, or even sign your kids up for an eventful Summer full of sensory learning experiences at the Art Center. They’ll enjoy creating their own art, taking it home, and proudly displaying it in their room.

details to consider before booking your event
Upon speaking with the lady at the front desk, I learned you are able to hire a caterer of your choice; however, food and beverage are not allowed upstairs, and a police officer will be hired for the event to ensure all the art on display is protected.
artistic playground
An added bonus, if you have children at your event, there is a wonderful kids zone, full of interactive stations. Coloring and drawing, Legos, magnets, and even a “switchboard” will keep your kids engaged and learning all night long.
final thoughts
Art, in all forms, need to be cherished; it symbolizes something different to everyone, and breaks language barriers. It carries with it emotions, inspiration and honed talent and skills of the individual artist themselves.
So, if you find yourself drawn to art, and it holds a special significance in your heart, then consider the Art Center for you next venue. Your attendees will thank you. Allow the art on display to be the ice breaker for friends and family members who have never met. Plus, your contributions go directly back to the Art Center and the community.
cost to book your event
If you are considering renting out the Art Center, it is $200 an hour, but that does not include food, drink, tables, chairs, linens or a security officer. I’m not sure how late the Art Center will remain open for your event, so you may want to contact them directly with your questions.
