The Home Builders Association of Greater Siouxland hosted their 62nd Annual Home Show this past weekend at the Convention Center. I was so excited to go to this, for two reasons. First, to meet local business owners, and second, to learn about the products available.
My First Time Going to a Home Show
The Home Show was this past weekend from Thursday, February 28th to Sunday, March 3rd. I went Thursday afternoon, knowing it wouldn’t be too busy on the opening day, and I would have more time to socialize with vendors. I paid $6, received a map of the booth setups, and a reusable bag in which I would eventually put all my booklets and business cards I received throughout my two hour visit.
Our Planned Home Projects
My fiancé and I will be working on several home projects this summer. We need a front door replaced, siding power washed, hardwood floors refinished, landscaping in the backyard, as well as improvement to our curb appeal and finally planting some bulbs for next fall. Whew!
So that being said, I needed to get to know my community, and who could help me. I met several business owners, but focused on only associating with local businesses.
Businesses From All Over Siouxland
There were business owners from Lawton, Orange City, Le Mars, Cherokee and even Wayne, Nebraska. Over 100 vendors specializing in windows, carpets, doors, siding, gutters, alarm systems, grandfather clocks, patio designs, fence building, pest control and landscaping.
Surprisingly, and also uplifting, was that many business owners recommended each other! If they did not specialize in what I was asking, they immediately referred me to another business owner. And all of them knew each other by name!
My Experiences
I picked up recipe books, educational brochures, business cards, catalogs and even coupons! I also watched a guy demonstrate kitchen utensils and small appliances. I learned about milk, beef and pork. Finally, I had my neck examined by a chiropractor, and I even saw a robotic lawn mower demonstration!
Volunteer Work and Future Plans
I signed up to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and MakerSpace. I only have experience using a hammer, but I’m willing to learn anything, and donate my time to my community.
We plan to follow up with several businesses throughout the spring and summer. This will also give me a chance to make visits to their show rooms, see their products and write detailed reviews.
